Characteristics

AvenaGlucan is a valuable active ingredient for both skin-regenerating and anti-aging products. It is also ideal for the care of sensitive skin, baby skin, and the eye area.

Oatmeal, or oat porridge, is a time-tested, soothing home remedy for skin irritation, redness, and itching. Colloidal oatmeal is even listed by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) as a "skin protectant active ingredient." In fact, it contains a variety of interesting components whose positive effects on the skin are scientifically proven.

One of these active ingredients is β-glucan (beta-glucan) - a natural polysaccharide. AvenaGlucan is a pure, concentrated premium β-glucan, provided at 1% concentration in an aqueous solution combined with moisturizing, penetration-enhancing substances. Similar to hyaluronic acid, AvenaGlucan contains both high-molecular and low-molecular weight fractions. This allows it to act both on the skin's surface and in deeper skin layers. The high-molecular fractions bind many times their own weight in water, keep the skin surface supple, and protect against dehydration. The finer-molecular fractions are able to penetrate further into the epidermis and interact with the skin's own lipids in the extracellular space (between skin cells).

The following efficacy evidence has been documented for AvenaGlucan:

• Moisture retention and smoothing of the skin surface (firming and anti-wrinkle)
  
• Promotes the formation of the skin's own hyaluronic acid (improves the overall moisture content of the skin)
• Accelerated regeneration and wound healing (stimulates cell renewal)
• Strengthens the skin barrier (reduces transepidermal water loss)
• Reduces redness (with regular use)

In addition, it provides a particularly soft, smooth skin feel and has moisture-retaining properties similar to those of hyaluronic acid. AvenaGlucan can therefore be used as a replacement for, or to complement, hyaluronic acid.

Despite its natural origin, AvenaGlucan is not approved for certified natural cosmetics due to the penetration-enhancing humectants hexanediol and caprylyl glycol.

Recommended concentration and processing

• 2 - 10% in leave-on products (emulsions, toners, serums) - efficacy studies were conducted at 5%
  
• Simply stir into the finished product at temperatures below 40°C (easy to incorporate)
• The product sometimes thickens significantly. To get the product out of the bottle and dose it easily, simply place it in hot water for 15 minutes and shake occasionally
