Characteristics

A balanced fruit acid complex with moisturizing and antioxidant properties for accelerated skin renewal - effective yet gentle.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) - also known as "fruit acids" - have long been used in cosmetics and dermatology for chemical peels. Depending on their molecular size, they penetrate more or less deeply into the skin's horny layer, where they accelerate the shedding of skin cells and also provide moisture. In this way, the formation of new cells is promoted, thereby stimulating overall skin regeneration. This leads to a more even complexion, smaller pores, and a younger appearance. Furthermore, the low pH of AHAs results in a bacteriostatic effect, which keeps unwanted bacterial strains, such as acne bacteria, in check. However, this peeling effect also leads to a thinner skin barrier, which can be accompanied by mild irritation, redness, and photosensitivity (light sensitivity).

Regenine, on the other hand, relies on three well-tolerated acids of natural origin and an additional mix of plant-based active ingredients:

• Tartaric acid (from grapes),
• Malic acid (in the form of apple extract),
• Citric acid (in the form of lemon extract),
• enzymatically hydrolyzed grape skin, and
• enzymatically hydrolyzed wheat bran.

This mixture ensures a gentle exfoliating (peeling) effect with very high skin compatibility.

Special enzyme technology is used to "liquefy" grape skins and wheat bran. This allows the secondary plant compounds contained within them to be made available to the skin. These are therefore not ordinary plant extracts, but actually complete plant parts in a liquid, bioavailable form.

In addition to AHAs, Regenine therefore contains valuable polyphenols such as catechins, ferulic acid, and anthocyanins. These are known for their strong antioxidant properties and can protect the skin from free radicals and inflammatory processes, as well as slow down the skin's own collagen and elastin breakdown.

Natural sugars (oligo- and polysaccharides), derived from the hydrolyzed cell walls of the plants, reinforce the moisturizing effect of Regenine. They have a calming effect, improve skin tone, and thus provide a slight "plumping" and smoothing of the skin.

It is this unique mixture of a multitude of effective plant molecules that, together with the natural fruit acids, not only ensures a superficial, gentle peeling effect and accelerated cell renewal, but also leads to revitalization and cell regeneration in deeper layers of the skin. The tolerability of Regenine is also far higher than that of comparable AHA treatments. In vitro tests showed increased tolerance at the cellular level as well as lower photosensitivity. However, we still recommend using high UV protection during the day, especially while sunbathing.

Regenine can also be used effectively in hair care. In shampoos, the acids neutralize the limescale in the water, thus ensuring softer hair. In addition, the small molecules of the acids can easily penetrate the hair and unfold their moisture-binding effect there. By lowering the pH, the cuticle is sealed, the hair is protected, and shine is promoted. The antioxidant potential of the polyphenols contained also protects the hair from environmental influences and color fading.

Recommended concentration and processing

• 2 - 6% in leave-on products such as serums, toners, or emulsions (pH 3.5 - 4)
• 10% in rinse-off products such as masks or peeling products (pH 3 - 4: rinse off the product after approx. 5 minutes!)
• Use in the water phase or stir/homogenize into the product at the end (preferably below 40 degrees).

Special notes on AHAs

Acids can generally be used in emulsions. Here, they do not act as directly on the skin because they are "diluted" in the emulsion and are released to the skin with a time delay. This reduces the irritation potential and makes the end product better tolerated. However, processing can turn out to be not entirely simple. Many emulsifiers have problems with low pH values, making the use of large amounts of acid problematic. Often, emulsions become unstable. Therefore, an emulsifier that is specifically suitable for this should be used, and it should be stabilized with gelling agents (e.g., Xanthan Sense) in order to achieve better emulsion stability.

It is much easier to incorporate acids into a gel serum. Xanthan is also well suited for this, as it is quite acid-tolerant. With a high concentration of acids, the gel may potentially become a bit more fluid. In this case, we recommend increasing the amount of Xanthan slightly.

When formulating AHA products, it is essential to pay attention to the pH of the end product: The effect of the product is determined not only by the concentration of the acid used, but also by the final pH!

Chemically speaking: If the pH of the end product is higher, acids are no longer present just as acids, but also as their salts. AHAs have a reduced peeling effect here, but their moisturizing potential is retained. If the pH is lower, the acid content is ultimately higher and the product is therefore more effective. However, a pH that is too low should definitely be avoided to prevent irritation! We recommend never dropping below a pH of 3. Also, "strong" products should not be used too regularly.
