Characteristics

The benzoate-free version of Preblend Aqua.

Preblend Aqua S consists of two organic acids or their salts, pre-dissolved in water. It is effective against bacteria and highly effective against yeasts and molds. In aqueous systems (toners, micellar waters, sprays, etc.), surfactant formulations (shampoos, shower gels, etc.), as well as in water-in-oil emulsions, it is sufficient as a stand-alone preservative. In oil-in-water emulsions, we recommend the simultaneous use of a surface-active substance to optimize the effect against bacteria. Suitable substances for this include glycols such as Pentylene Glycol or Butylene Glycol, or even Glyceryl Caprylate. Propanediol also has a moderate boosting effect when used in sufficient quantities.

To ensure preservative performance, the pH value of the final product must be in the slightly acidic range or lower—that is, below 6, preferably below 5.5. The effectiveness of Preblend Aqua increases as the pH value drops, which means it can be used in smaller amounts in acidic products, such as facial toners or AHA products.

The salts in the product can cause interactions with certain raw materials that are sensitive to electrolytes—e.g., Sepinov WEO (has a thinning effect)!

Preblend Aqua S does not contain sodium benzoate, but potassium sorbate instead. This is of interest for the following products:

• Baby products (benzoic acid and its derivatives are often avoided here)
• Products for benzoate allergies
• Benzoate-free products (sometimes used for marketing reasons)

Use concentration and processing

• 0.5 - 1.5% in all formulations (depending on the pH value)

IMPORTANT NOTE: A dropper is included with the 60g versions. In the larger volume units, this is not possible due to the thread size. We recommend transferring the product to a smaller container or extracting it cleanly using a pipette.
