Moisture-binding active ingredient
Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is a long-chain polysaccharide that can be added to water-based products as an active ingredient for skin hydration and anti-aging effects. It penetrates deeper into the skin than high molecular weight hyaluronic acid. It binds water, has a skin-tightening effect, and supports wound healing.
INCI

Characteristics
Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types and all types of water-based cosmetic products. It is primarily used in anti-aging facial products, especially in creams, serums, and products for the eye area.
Hyaluronic acid remains a universally popular active ingredient in skincare. It has become an essential component in moisturizing and anti-aging products. The term "hyaluronic acid" is actually not entirely accurate; it is more correctly "Sodium Hyaluronate." This means that it is not an acid, but rather the salt of an acid. Chemically, sodium hyaluronate is a polysaccharide, i.e., a long-chain complex sugar. Each link in the chain consists of two building blocks: glucuronic acid and acetylglucosamine. Hyaluronic acid is considered particularly well-tolerated because it occurs naturally in the body. It is found in the "extracellular matrix"—the space between the cells. It plays a major role in, for example, our joint fluid and the vitreous humor of the eye.
Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid consists of shorter-chain molecules than high molecular weight hyaluronic acid and can penetrate the skin better and more deeply. Unlike its high molecular weight counterpart, it does not have a thickening effect and cannot be used as a gelling agent. As a cosmetic active ingredient, it binds a large amount of moisture in the skin and retains it for a long time. In this way, the skin is plumped up from the inside, fine lines are minimized, and the complexion appears firmer and fresher overall. Further functions of hyaluronic acid include supporting antioxidants as well as having anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects. Hyaluronic acid can therefore also be effectively used in skin-soothing formulations.
We recommend combining high molecular weight and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid in a single product. This effectively hydrates the skin both on the surface and from within, firms it, and protects it against moisture loss.
