Characteristics
Reliable broad-spectrum UV protection and a light skin feel.
Organic sun filters are oil-soluble substances that form a film on the skin capable of absorbing UV radiation. For optimal effectiveness, however, it is essential that the UV filters are dissolved in the oil phase and, above all, remain dissolved. This is because many organic UV filters are crystal-like waxes that tend to crystallize out subsequently, meaning they can no longer provide protection.
SolarLite is Bemotrizinol – a highly effective and stable organic UV filter with reliable UVA and UVB protection. It has already been processed as an aqueous solution and can therefore be easily incorporated into the water phase. Heating and dissolving in the oil phase are therefore unnecessary.
Protective effect of UV filters
The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of a product refers only to its effect against UVB radiation. The protective effect against UVA radiation must be at least one third of the stated SPF, but as a rule, no further information is provided about this.
Although using more UV filters leads to a higher SPF, this depends on significantly more factors. An exact SPF can only be determined by means of in vivo tests in a laboratory. Therefore, if you are planning a sunscreen formulation, you can only estimate the SPF.
The estimated SPF is derived from the theoretical, calculated assessment based on the usage concentration. However, the total formulation and the method of processing are also essential for the actual SPF, and this can, under certain circumstances, deviate significantly. Water and wipe resistance are also verified by independent institutes.
Therefore, we cannot guarantee the actual protective effect of this product and advise cautious handling of UV radiation.
Guidelines for SPF usage concentration
SPF 6* -> min. 3 % SolarLite
SPF 10* -> min. 5 % SolarLite
SPF 15* -> min. 7.5 % SolarLite
SPF 20* -> min. 9.5 % SolarLite
*) in silico
The maximum permitted usage concentration of SolarLite is 10 %. The theoretical SPF here would be approx. 21.9. To achieve a higher SPF, SolarLite must be combined with other UV filters.
The ratio of UVA absorption to UVB absorption is over 0.95. This means that with an SPF of 30, the protective effect against UVA radiation would be approx. 29. The required one-third ratio of protective effect against UVA radiation can therefore be very easily achieved with SolarLite.
However, the effect of SolarLite does not extend as far into the UVA range as specialized organic UVA filters can! Therefore, appropriate combinations of UV filters are necessary for high UVA protection.
