True licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has long been known as a medicinal and therapeutic plant. As a tea, it is valued for its supportive effect on the respiratory tract, as well as for its sweet taste. The latter is also why it is used in the production of licorice candy.
The skin-relevant component of licorice is glycyrrhetinic acid, a glycoside or pentacyclic triterpene acid with a sweet taste and an interesting spectrum of activity. However, pure glycyrrhetinic acid is poorly water-soluble. To increase its solubility and thus its field of application, it is usually modified and processed as an ammonia or dipotassium salt (Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate). The latter has the best water solubility and even possesses surface-active, and therefore emulsifying, properties.
Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate is characterized by the following properties:
- highly anti-inflammatory
- soothing and calming
- anti-irritant
- reduces skin redness
- reduces itching and allergic signs on the skin
- regulates sebum production
- mildly brightening
- antioxidant
For these reasons, the active ingredient is particularly suitable for sensitive and blemish-prone skin. It is sometimes even compared to the soothing effect of cortisone, and there is indeed a certain structural similarity in the molecule. Since inflammatory processes also promote premature skin aging, it is also excellently suited for anti-aging products, as well as—at higher concentrations—for skin-brightening products.
The active ingredient demonstrates its strengths primarily in products for irritated and reddened skin. Therefore, its use in after-sun products is a natural choice, as well as in soothing products for irritated skin (e.g., after intensive cosmetic treatments). It can be easily incorporated into serums, tonics, and creams. However, please note that its solubility is not quite as optimal or rapid as other water-soluble raw materials. The use of glycols or solubilizers can be helpful here.
Its use in dental care products is also interesting. Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate has a very sweet taste and can therefore be used as a sweetener. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it also plays an interesting role here in cases of gum problems or sensitive oral mucosa.
Usage concentration and processing
- 0.1 - 0.5% for sensitive skin
- 0.4 - 1% for skin blemishes and skin irritation
- 1% in brightening products
- dissolve in the water phase (optimally together with glycols)
