Characteristics

Propanediol Green is a humectant that can be used for all types of water-based products such as emulsions, toners, shampoos, and shower gels. It is very versatile and can be used effectively almost everywhere.

Humectants are practically a fixed component of emulsions and other water-based skincare products. They provide moisture, dissolve substances such as active ingredients, and also protect the product itself from drying out. However, many feel sticky on the skin and leave an unpleasant, greasy sensation.

Propanediol Green is superior to glycerin in most aspects. It has a nearly similarly strong effect as a moisturizer. However, it is much less sticky and gives the skin a hydrated, almost velvety finish. It has a very light surface-active effect. This supports the formation of emulsions and boosts other preservatives (e.g., Preblend Aqua). It is also a relatively good solvent and helps to dissolve oils and water-insoluble substances in water (similar to alcohol). Caution: In high concentrations, it can make emulsions somewhat more fluid. This can be used intentionally if a more fluid, softer consistency is desired. At very high concentrations (> 25% of the water phase), Propanediol Green could theoretically be used for preservation alone, but this is not recommended!

Another interesting area of application is as an extraction agent for plant extracts. It can be used alone or in combination with alcohol and/or water. Due to its slightly pronounced lipophilic (fat-loving) properties, you can extract different substances from the plant material than with water or glycerin.

Tip: To remove the stickiness of humectants from emulsions, our Lipoblend Ultralite is particularly suitable.
