Characteristics

The classic choice for creamy, soft emulsions and a smooth skin feel!

Glyceryl stearate is a plant-based consistency agent with very good co-emulsifying properties. It has a slightly higher HLB value than cetearyl alcohol and is therefore often combined with it to stabilize emulsions and provide consistency through synergy. It forms liquid-crystalline networks in emulsions and is able to bind water and release it to the skin with a time-delay.

Unlike fatty alcohols, glyceryl stearate forms richer emulsions with a moist skin feel. It is therefore particularly good for nourishing products and dry skin conditions; for oily skin conditions, it is usually too heavy. It appears less matte, dry, or dull than cetearyl alcohol, but can also feel strongly enveloping or greasy-waxy at higher dosages. This is another reason why a combination with cetearyl alcohol is recommended to balance out the advantages and disadvantages of the substances.

As a sole emulsifier, glyceryl stearate is too weak. Therefore, it is usually combined with a "proper" emulsifier. We recommend Emulwax Rice for this, for example.

Combination options:

Lotions (approx. 15% oil):

2% Emulwax Rice, 0.5% glyceryl stearate + 0.5% cetearyl alcohol

Creams (approx. 20% oil):

3% Emulwax Rice + 1% glyceryl stearate + 1% cetearyl alcohol

Rich cream (approx. 25% oil):

3.5% Emulblend Rice + 2% glyceryl stearate + 1% cetearyl alcohol + 1% Waxblend Hydrosoft

 

Usage concentration and processing

    • 1 - 5% in emulsions
    • melt in the oil phase at approx. 61 - 64 degrees
    • HLB value: approx. 3
