Everyone is likely familiar with peppermint – whether from chewing gum, tea, aroma lamps, or cold balms. It is a time-tested and popular natural remedy with a multitude of applications.

Unlike milder spearmint, peppermint contains a particularly high proportion of menthol (over 35%). This not only gives it the typical cooling effect on the skin and mucous membranes but also makes it a valued companion for muscle tension, headaches, or cold symptoms.

Peppermint essential oil consists mainly of menthol, menthone, and 1,8-cineole. These active ingredients provide its intensive, penetrating effect, which – depending on the application – can be both invigorating and calming.

In aromatherapy, peppermint oil is especially prized for its refreshing, concentration-enhancing properties. The cooling effect is ideal for massage blends for strained muscles or as an invigorating room fragrance – especially for fatigue, hot flashes, or a "cluttered mind." Peppermint oil is also commonly used for colds due to its high menthol content to help clear the airways, and in oral care products, it is known primarily for its sharp, fresh aroma.

For digestive issues such as bloating or a feeling of fullness, peppermint – in the form of tea or oil – has traditionally proven effective. However, peppermint oil should only be used in child-appropriate dosages and never undiluted for children.
