Blemishes arise due to excessive sebum production, clogged pores, and an unbalanced microbiome. Bacteria – primarily Cutibacterium acnes – metabolize the sebum, multiply excessively, and leave metabolic products on the skin. These cause irritation and inflammation of the pores – also known as pimples.

A distinction is made between normal, blemish-prone skin and pathological acne. The root cause is often hormonal.
