Menthol is a colorless to whitish crystalline, needle-like substance obtained from the essential oils of mint. It is known for its intensely cooling effect, which is immediately noticeable on the skin. Menthol is used in a versatile manner in cosmetic formulations – both for its cooling properties and due to other modes of action.
For optimal processing, we recommend dissolving it in the oil phase. For this, Liposens is very well suited, for example, as it has good solvent properties. Alternatively, it can also be dissolved in ethanol.
Cooling and circulation-promoting:
Menthol stimulates the cold receptors in the skin (TRPM8 ion channels), which creates a distinct sensation of freshness – without actually lowering the skin temperature. This effect is both invigorating and soothing and is widely used in products for stressed, tired, or overheated skin. In low concentrations, it has only a slightly refreshing effect and can even be used for lip and eye area care to provide a hint of coolness (0.1 - 0.2%).
It can also be used in refreshing shampoos or shower gels to achieve a lasting and circulation-promoting effect (0.5 - 1%). This is particularly interesting in products for summer!
In high concentrations, menthol is mainly used for its circulation-promoting and muscle-relaxing effects and acts in an activating and invigorating way - perfect for massage or sports products (2 - 5%).
Anti-itch & soothing:
The cooling effect can have a soothing effect on itchy or irritated skin. Menthol is therefore popular in after-sun products, foot care, scalp care, and light lotions, where it provides immediate relief.
Microbial control:
Menthol possesses weak antimicrobial properties which, in combination with other active ingredients, can contribute to controlling certain microorganisms – such as in deodorants or foot care products.
