Characteristics

Xanthan is a natural, anionic polysaccharide produced via fermentation from sugar. It is arguably the most widely used gelling agent suitable for natural cosmetics and is also used in food products.

Xanthan is a rightfully popular gelling agent because it is easy to process and can be combined with many raw materials. Xanthan is one of the thickeners that forms so-called "thixotropic" gels—these are gels that are characterized by a stable consistency in the bottle but become more fluid when moved (e.g., when dispensed or applied to the skin). In emulsions, heat stability is often a concern, as other consistency agents like fatty alcohols or butters themselves have little stabilizing effect. Even 0.2 - 0.4% Xanthan Sense can make a decisive difference here, as it keeps the finely emulsified oil droplets suspended in the product.

However, most xanthan types are somewhat slimy and form a "gelatinous" consistency. Xanthan Sense, by contrast, is characterized by a fluid, softer texture and enables an elegant, silky application. As a result, it provides slightly less consistency than other types of xanthan. This can be compensated for by slightly increasing the usage concentration (approx. 10%).

Surfactant formulations (e.g., shower gels or shampoos) can also be excellently thickened and stabilized with Xanthan Sense. It is distinguished here by particularly beautiful flow properties and product clarity. If you want to keep particles suspended in (surfactant) gels (clays, exfoliating particles, pearlescent agents, glitter, etc.), you should definitely consider Xanthan Sense so that they do not settle in the product over time.

Usage concentration and processing

• 0.1 – 0.6% in emulsions

• 0.2 – 1.2% in gels and surfactant products

• Disperse in propanediol, glycols, alcohol, or glycerin - then dissolve in the water phase
