Characteristics
Red color pigment - also known as Lithol Rubine or Pigment Red 57:1 - is a synthetic red azo pigment and has a slightly bluish red hue with very high color strength.
It is approved for a wide variety of applications, including cosmetics and even food (it is known from the red waxy coating on some types of cheese). It is only poorly soluble in water and is therefore dispersed in the oil phase.
It is mostly used in decorative cosmetic products such as lipsticks, blush, and eyeshadow. It gives cosmetic formulations an intense red color with a drift towards magenta and is not shiny.
It can also be used in emulsions as well as liquid and solid cosmetic products to give them a light pink tint. It is not suitable for soap making as it is not stable in the high pH range.
Recommended concentration and processing
- 0.5 - 5% as a colorant in decorative cosmetics
- 0.1 - 0.3% as a coloring additive in care products
