Characteristics

Instabond Velvet is a special candidate in the range of gelling agents. Gels created with it differ completely in their texture and flowability from other gelling agents such as xanthan gum. They are less gel-like and "slimy," and instead much more velvety and consistent. Emulsions and serums with Instabond Velvet appear richer and more enveloping upon application, yet have a velvety, light, and mattifying finish. This is perfect for hand creams, eye creams and serums, as well as face creams and serums, for example.

Unlike most gelling agents, starch is not anionic but non-ionic (the molecules carry no negative charge). As a result, Instabond Velvet can also be combined with cationic emulsifiers (which carry a positive charge in the molecule). This is usually the case with hair conditioners and hair treatments. Hair products in particular often require a high level of consistency, making a suitable thickening agent necessary.

A minor drawback of Instabond Velvet is that the gels formed are never water-clear, but always cloudy. However, this does not matter in emulsions or slightly milky products. Furthermore, surfactant products can be stabilized and thickened with this gelling agent.

Usage concentration and processing

• 1 - 6% in emulsions and surfactant products

• Disperse (mix thoroughly) in propanediol, glycols, alcohol, or glycerin, add this mixture to the water phase, and allow to swell according to the application
