Versatile solvent for a wide variety of cosmetic products

Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is mostly used in cosmetic products as a solvent or for preservation, or to support preservation. As a sole preservative, the concentration should not be below 12%. Emulsions with higher alcohol content tend to become somewhat thinner and can thus lose stability. In return, alcohol can improve the application properties and reduce the whitening effect.

In perfumes and other fragrance products, ethanol is suitable for dissolving the fragrance oils.

In high concentrations, ethanol can have a drying effect on the skin (e.g., in hand sanitizers). Here, Propanediol Green and/or jojoba ester gel can counteract this.

Recommended concentration and processing

• As required in all types of water-based products

• min. 75% in disinfectants

• min. 12% as a preservative

• Note: The percentages refer to 100% alcohol - however, "Weingeist" (rectified spirit) only contains 96% alcohol (and 4% water)!
